CBS Students Produce Exceptional Projects

Construction Studies is now offered at Leaving Certificate Level here in Méanscoil na mBráithre. Introduced last year for the first time in the history of the school, it proved to an incredible success with all students sitting the examination receiving excellent results.

Construction Studies syllabus is focused the study of buildings and the built environment. It is has also a very practical subject providing  “hands-on” experience working with tools and machinery and using materials such as wood, metals and plastic.

Examination of the subject has three components; a practical exam, allocated 25% of the overall marks, a student project, allocated 25% of the overall marks and a theory-based examination as part of the main timetabled Leaving Certificate examinations. The final examination investigates topics such as heat and thermal effects, illumination and substructure/superstructure with a focus on domestic buildings

This is an excellent subject for a practically-minded student who has a keen interest in buildings. The theory is not complex and relates to examples taken from everyday life. Having studied Woodwork at Junior Certificate level is an advantage but is not necessary.

The Junior Certificate Subject Materials Technology (Wood) provides students in the Junior Cycle of post-primary education with an opportunity to explore their role in making and shaping their environment. It exposes the students to the use of a design process, which is a central feature of the subject. Using the Design process the students undertake tasks that require the use of practical problem-solving skills and the application of scientific and technological knowledge.

Materials Technology (Wood) is assessed at two levels, Ordinary level and Higher level, means of by a student project (66%) and a written examination paper (33%).

Materials Technology Wood (MTW/ Woodwork) has been offered here at Méanscoil na mBráithre for the past 20 years. It is a very popular subject choice for students as they get a chance to develop and showcase newly attained practical skills. High grades are achieved regularly in this subject due to the high standard of work produced by students
